The National Park Service will build a visitor center at the King Gillette Ranch near Las Virgenes Canyon Road and Mulholland Highway.
The $6.8 million visitor center will be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as part of a national stimulus program. Construction will begin this spring and the visitor center could be open by 2012.
The building will provide visitor services for the public parks in the Santa Monica Mountains and will be overseen by the National Park Service, California State Parks, and Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.
Part of the high cost is due to the LEED platinum environmental certification the building will seek to obtain.
The contract was awarded to Big-D Construction and affiliated AJC Architects, which are based in Salt Lake City.
The stables are part of the estate built by disposable razor mogul King C. Gillette. A group of public agencies bought the 588 acre property for $35 million in 2005.
