The Simi Valley chapter of ABATE, a motorcycle advocacy group, roared into Agoura with its ‘Sweaty Buns Poker Run.”
Chapter President Ray Arsnow said about a hundred bikers took place in the ride, which served as a fundraiser for the group. The riders ended up in Agoura Hills to a party with live music.
ABATE is a nationwide group of motorcycle riders that educates riders and non-riders about motorcycle issues, and is the leading advocacy group for bikers’ rights in California.
Every year, the state looks into tightening motorcycle riding laws, from increased insurance regulations to noise restrictions to tightened smog laws. This year’s political fight has centered on SB 435, sponsored by Sen. Fran Pavley (D), who formerly served as the mayor of Agoura.
ABATE has been fighting the proposed smog/noise bill, which would make it a crime to modify exhaust pipes without a sticker indicating it meets Federal noise emissions standards. While the current version of the legislation grandfathers in bikes, earlier versions would have made made thousands of bikes throughout the state illegal.
On Sunday, though, the mood was more about riding, music and friendship as bikers ended their poker run ride at Slingers in Agoura, where owner Paul Shell is a rider as well.
