Mislabeled Census Packets with Agoura Hills Mark Concerns Oak Park Residents
March 26, 2010
A recent snafu with the addresses on U.S. Census packets has Oak Park residents concerned about how the census information will be processed and used.
Although the census packets had the correct Oak Park zip code—91377—the city on the address was listed as Agoura Hills rather than Oak Park. Oak Park broke off from Agoura Hills and got its own zip code in 1999, a move the community made to prevent confusion regarding insurance and other matters.
Some Oak Park residents are worried that the information the census gathers—which is used to determine things like federal funding for education, transportation and public health as well as representation in legislative districts—will not be attributed to the correct community. However, a representative from the regional census office in Northridge assured Oak Park residents that the label of Agoura Hills on the packets was used for postal sorting purposes only and that the bar code on the return envelopes ensures that the information is correctly attributed.
