LAUSD Relaxes Proposed Limits on Permits for Students in Neighboring Districts

April 7, 2010

Following a widespread public outcry, the superintendent of the Los Angeles Board of Education announced Tuesday that he will not force most residents whose children attend school elsewhere to get their education in the district in the upcoming school year.

Supt. Ramon C. Cortines moved for limitations on permits families requested to send their children to neighboring districts because the Los Angeles Unified School District was losing massive amounts of money by approving such permits.

Parents in the area cried foul, and Cortines relaxed his position this week. However, he noted that he intends to ask the board in September to create a policy to deal with the situation beginning with the 2011-12 school year.
