City, School District May Build “Affordable Housing” for Teachers

The government of Agoura Hills and the Las Virgenes Unified School District are working to build affordable housing units for teachers and school employees.

The city and school district are concerned that high housing prices deter potential teaching hires. The median home price in Agoura Hills is $578,000, according to Zillow.com which exceeds the average house price for Los Angeles and Ventura County.

“We love to find ways to generate more revenue for the school district and also find ways to attract and retain good teachers,” said Nathan Zimring, assistant city manger, to America Online. “Certainly one of the ways to do that is to say, ‘We know our community is an expensive community, but we can offer subsidized housing.’”

The first is a vacant plot on Easterly Road behind Agoura High School. The school district believes the purchase price would be about $6.4 million. The second development is an area of 100 acres adjacent to Highway 101 north of Agoura that is owned by Gateway Church. There are currently no financing or construction plans.

The city is also considering affordability covenants for apartment unit owners. A covenant would allow the unit to be rented only to people with a low or moderate income designation.
