Deputy Who Arrested Mel Gibson Sues Own Department

September 8, 2010

Deputy James Mee, who arrested Mel Gibson in 2006 for drunk driving, sued the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department Tuesday claiming his career has suffered since the arrest.

Me, 55, who is Jewish, claims he has not been prompted to motorcycle deputy or traffic investigator and was transferred after the Gibson arrest.

Mee’s attorney, Etan Z Lorant, told ABC News that Mee wants his reputation with the department to be restored and hopes the lawsuit will resolve that. He is also seeking unspecified damages for loss of income, medical expenses, emotional distress, and mental suffering.

Mee claims supervisors forced him to remove anti-Semitic slurs said by Gibson during the arrest from the arrest report. Part of the report containing slurs was leaked to celebrity website TMZ.com. Mee says he was the subject of a 4 year departmental criminal investigation into the leak. The district attorney ultimately declined to press charges.
